چکیده
Abstract Hybridization has been associated with increased invasiveness in plants. In North America, the hybrid aquatic plant Myriophyllum spicatum × sibiricum (hybrid watermilfoil, hereafter HWM) is a cross between non-native invasive Eurasian watermilfoil ( M. , EWM) and native northern NWM). Lab-based trials have demonstrated higher growth rates HWM compared to EWM NWM, but these patterns not systematically examined field. this study, we of its parental taxa, by examining amount timing of: (1) flowering, (2) surface cover, (3) biomass (using stem counts as proxy). We conducted repeat surveys beds at eight lakes (2–3 lakes/taxon) Minneapolis–St. Paul Metropolitan area (Minnesota, USA) June 2017 November 2018. produced more flower spikes earlier overall, maintained consistently throughout growing season than NWM. addition, cover reached greater annual peaks was for longer both taxa. did observe significant difference among three reach maximum number stems either taxon. This study provides field-based evidence hybridization NWM; specifically, reproductive potential via flowering may increase spread, impacts on species, pose nuisance lake users.

Photosynthesis in Eurasian Watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.).
Gas exchange of Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.) indicated a near-zero CO(2) compensation point and a high temperature optimum for photosynthesis. These properties are characteristic of plants fixing CO(2) by a beta-carboxylation mechanism. Operation of the Calvin cycle was shown and no evidence for beta-carboxylation was obtained. These results indicate that near-zero CO(2) com...
متن کاملEpiphytic macroinvertebrate communities on Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) and native milfoils Myriophyllum sibericum and Myriophyllum alterniflorum in eastern North America
Aquatic macrophytes play an important role in the survival and proliferation of invertebrates in freshwater ecosystems. Epiphytic invertebrate communities may be altered through the replacement of native macrophytes by exotic macrophytes, even when the macrophytes are close relatives and have similar morphology. We sampled an invasive exotic macrophyte, Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spica...
متن کاملChemical profile of the North American native Myriophyllum sibiricum compared to the invasive M. spicatum
Myriophyllum spicatum L. is a nonindigenous invasive plant in North America that can displace the closely related native Myriophyllum sibiricum Komarov. We analyzed the chemical composition (including: C, N, P, polyphenols, lignin, nonpolar extractables, and sugars) of M. spicatum and M. sibiricum and determined how the chemistry of the two species varied by plant part with growing environment ...
متن کاملHybrid watermilfoil lineages are more invasive and less sensitive to a commonly used herbicide than their exotic parent (Eurasian watermilfoil)
Hybridization may stimulate the evolution of invasiveness in human-impacted habitats if unique hybrid genotypes have higher fitness than parental genotypes. Human efforts to control invasive taxa frequently involve the intentional alteration of habitats, but few studies have considered whether hybridization can result in decreased sensitivity to control measures. Here, we investigate whether in...
متن کاملA KASP Genotyping Method to Identify Northern Watermilfoil, Eurasian Watermilfoil, and Their Interspecific Hybrids
The invasive aquatic plant Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.) can hybridize with the related North American native species northern watermilfoil (M. sibiricum Kom.). Hybrid watermilfoil (M. spicatum × M. sibiricum) populations have higher fitness and reduced sensitivity to some commonly used aquatic herbicides, making management more difficult. There is growing concern that manage...
